historical-nonfiction: In the 1904 Olympics in St. Louis, Missouri, “savages” were shipped from around the world to compete in the games — to show white men’s superiority. They were essentially kidnapped, from South America, Africa, and some Native Americans for good measure. They were pitted against each other for two days before the real games began, a bigoted opening act to demonstrate, indisputably, their lesser status.
